The editorial process

How are topics selected?

We review the main nutrition journals each month to identify important new research relevant to practising clinicians. Our Editorial Board maintains an overview role in topic selection and members of the Board might suggest some topics themselves. Indeed we welcome suggestions from any of our readers.

How is each issue written?

Producing each issue is a collaborative process involving the Editor-in-chief and a volunteer editorial team, including the volunteer translators who are all practising clinicians and/or academics.

In many cases we make personal contact with one or more authors of a research paper being summarised to question them in more detail about their work.

Our Editorial Board plays an important role in helping to see that we remain consistent with the weight of informed, scientifically justified opinion. One of more members of the Editorial Board may be asked to add their expert perspective on a particular topic, or to review the content of the upcoming issue.

Is the content independent of commercial bias?

We are firmly committed to remaining entirely independent. Sponsors and advertisers are required to comply with our explicit written policy that no commercial influence may be brought to bear on either the topics we chose nor what we say about them. Our Editorial Board is specifically tasked to watch out for any commercial bias that might inadvertently creep into our content.

How are the translations done?

We have a number of volunteer translation teams who translate the Updates into each of the 8 non-English languages in which the Updates are published (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Turkish, Russian, Korean and Japanese).

We are extremely grateful for their help, as they play a crucial role in our effort to provide nutrition information to health professionals in the developing world, who may not have such good access to the journals or libraries. Click here to learn more about our translated issues.
